Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run Sponsor Group Wins Prestigious National Award
WASHINGTON‚ February 24‚ 2010 — The title sponsor group of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run® won first place in the prestigious 2009 CUNA Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Program award. In 2008‚ for which the award was given‚ Credit Union Miracle Day‚ Inc. (CUMD)‚ a collaboration of 83 credit unions and 47 partnering organizations‚ raised $1.4 million for Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) affiliated children’s hospitals nationwide.
Since its inception in 2001‚ CUMD has donated over $4 million to Children’s Miracle Network children’s hospitals.
“We are so proud of this achievement and look forward to another exciting race year to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network‚” said Juri Valdov‚ Chairman of CUMD. “We have 22 active volunteer board and committee members from 14 credit unions and related organizations who work hard to accomplish our mission of supporting Children’s Miracle Network and raising the awareness of the credit union difference. PSCU Financial Services‚ our lead partner‚ underwrites the costs of the title sponsorship which allows all credit union donations to go directly to helping sick kids.
“Credit unions benefit in two ways: the money they donate goes back to their local children’s hospitals’ and the race gets the attention of our nation’s lawmakers — more than 600 Capitol Hill staffers participate in the race. It is a national event with local impact’” Valdov added.
The world-class running event takes place every April in Washington‚ DC. Nearly half of the 15‚000 runners are credit union members. Credit union sponsors also provided over 500 volunteers to help on race day. CUMD has been the title sponsor of the race since 2002. The 2010 race is on April 11.
The award was presented on Feb. 24‚ 2010 during CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference.
Dora Maxwell was an original signer of CUNA’s constitution and a tireless organizer of hundreds of credit unions throughout the United States. She also developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked tirelessly with organizations on behalf of the poor. The Maxwell award is presented to credit unions in seven asset size categories and a chapter or multiple group category for outstanding social responsibility projects in their community.
